Depression during Covid-19

The current situation of Covid-19 that we are currently experiencing represents a challenge for all of us, but it can represent an even greater challenge for all those who previously suffered from depression, given the fears that are generated, but also the restrictions imposed. This is due to the fact that in depression, everything that a person considers to be negative in his life, is generally amplified, namely his concerns and fears about the virus. Here are some important tips:

  • Stay active – You won’t feel like doing it, but do it anyway. Take a walk near your home, take a bike ride, or try some free classes on youtube, where you can find everything from more localized exercises to yoga classes, among others;
  • Structure your day-to-day – Structure your day and week in advance. Take an hour off your weekend to organize the next week. Structure from the time you wake up, to work or study hours, meals, to other pleasurable activities, such as reading, series, yoga, relaxation exercises, meditation;
  • Take breaks – It is important to keep us informed of the current situation, but listening to or reading excessively news about the pandemic can increase feelings of despair. So try to limit the time you are exposed to this news;
  • Avoid abuse of alcohol, tobacco or substance abuse – Even if at the moment it can make you feel better, your negative emotions will resurface later, and, most of the time, with greater intensity;
  • Stay in touch – Whether you are in quarantine or even in your home office, keep in touch with your friends. Organize a call by zoom. Participate in lives and online groups online;
  • Sleep hygiene – Do you feel tired and without energy and then you tend to go back to bed? This will most likely worsen the exhaustion and severity of the depression. Make good sleep hygiene. Don’t go to bed early and avoid naps during the day. A structure of your daily life can help you;
  • Ask for help – Nowadays, a large part of Clinical Psychologists already offer an online service. If you are unable to get a presential appointment, make an online appointment. The important thing is to help yourself;
